Ingredients

Main
  • 1 whole turkey 12-14 pounds
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh sage chopped

Equipment

  • Roasting pan
  • Meat thermometer
  • Basting brush
  • Aluminum foil
  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C).
  2. Remove the turkey from its packaging and take out the giblets from the cavity. Rinse it under cold water and pat it dry with paper towels.
  3. In a bowl, mix the softened butter, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, rosemary, thyme, and sage. Rub this mixture all over the turkey, including under the skin for more flavor.
  4. Transfer the turkey to a roasting pan, breast side up.
  5. Pour the chicken broth into the bottom of the roasting pan.
  6. Loosely cover the turkey with aluminum foil.
  7. Place the turkey in the oven and roast for about 2.5 hours.
  8. Remove the foil during the last 30 minutes to allow the skin to crisp up.
  9. Check the internal temperature with a meat thermometer, which should reach 165°F (75°C) in the thickest part of the thigh.
  10. Let the turkey rest for at least 20 minutes before carving.

Notes

Serve with classic sides like mashed potatoes and gravy.
