Ingredients

Main
  • 2-3 pounds tri-tip roast
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper optional for heat

Equipment

  • Grill or oven
  • Meat thermometer
  • Sharp knife for slicing
  • Cutting board
  • Mixing bowl for seasoning

Method

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine olive oil, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and cayenne pepper.
  2. Rub the marinade all over the tri-tip roast, ensuring to cover every inch.
  3. Let the seasoned tri-tip rest for at least 30 minutes at room temperature or refrigerate for several hours.
  4. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat or your oven to 425°F.
  5. Sear the tri-tip directly over the heat for about 4-5 minutes per side.
  6. Move the tri-tip to a cooler part of the grill or reduce the oven temperature to 350°F.
  7. Use a meat thermometer to check for doneness; aim for 135°F for medium-rare.
  8. Once cooked, let the tri-tip rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing.
  9. Slice against the grain for the most tender bites.

Notes

Pairs well with garlic mashed potatoes, grilled vegetables, or caesar salad.
