Ingredients

Main
  • 1 medium head of green cabbage cored and cut into wedges
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil optional for drizzling
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • Lemon wedges for serving (optional)

Equipment

  • Large pot with a lid
  • Steamer basket or insert
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Measuring cups
  • Tongs or a slotted spoon

Method

  1. Start by removing the outer leaves of the cabbage and cutting it into wedges.
  2. Fill a large pot with about 1 inch of water and place a steamer basket inside.
  3. Cover the pot and bring the water to a rapid boil over high heat.
  4. Carefully arrange the cabbage wedges in the steamer basket without overcrowding.
  5. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of salt over the cabbage while it’s steaming.
  6. Cover the pot and steam the cabbage for 8 to 10 minutes, until fork-tender and still vibrant green.
  7. Use tongs or a fork to check for doneness and remove any wedges that are ready.
  8. Transfer the steamed cabbage to a serving platter, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with freshly ground black pepper, and serve with lemon wedges if desired.
