- Step 1: Prepare the Beef: Start with cold ground beef and gently form into 4 equal 4-ounce balls.
- Step 2: Heat the Skillet: Heat a large skillet or cast iron pan over medium-high heat for about 2 minutes until very hot.
- Step 3: Smash the Burgers: Place one beef ball in the skillet and press down firmly with a spatula into a thin patty about ½-inch thick.
- Step 4: Season the Patties: Immediately sprinkle the smashed patty with salt and pepper and cook undisturbed.
- Step 5: Flip the Burgers: After 3 to 4 minutes, flip each patty and cook for an additional 2 to 3 minutes until browned.
- Step 6: Add Cheese: Place a slice of cheese on each patty after flipping and cover with a lid for 1 minute to melt.
- Step 7: Toast the Buns: In the last minute of cooking, place the buns cut-side down in the skillet and toast until lightly browned, about 1 minute.
- Step 8: Assemble and Serve: Remove burgers and buns from skillet, layer patties on buns with toppings and sauces, and serve immediately.
