Ingredients

Main
  • 1 cup fresh mint leaves plus extra for garnish
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup bourbon
  • 1/2 cup water hot
  • Crushed ice as needed

Equipment

  • Muddler or wooden spoon
  • Julep cups or glasses
  • Measuring jigger
  • Strainer
  • Ice crusher or blender (optional)

Method

  1. Start by gently rinsing the fresh mint leaves under cold water to remove any dirt.
  2. In a sturdy cup or mixing glass, add the mint leaves and granulated sugar. Use a muddler to press down gently, releasing the mint oils and combining them with the sugar.
  3. Add the hot water to the muddled mint and sugar mixture. Stir until the sugar is fully dissolved, creating a sweet mint syrup.
  4. Pour in the bourbon and stir gently to combine.
  5. Fill your julep cups or glasses with crushed ice.
  6. Using a strainer, pour the mint and bourbon mixture over the crushed ice in each glass.
  7. Add a sprig of fresh mint to each glass for garnish.
  8. Serve the Mint Juleps immediately, and encourage your guests to stir their drinks before sipping.

Notes

Mint Juleps are best enjoyed fresh and can be customized with flavored bourbons or fresh fruit.
