Ingredients

Main
  • 2 cups dried hominy
  • 6 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Equipment

  • Large pot
  • Colander
  • Wooden spoon
  • Measuring cups
  • Serving bowl

Method

  1. Rinse the dried hominy under cold water to remove dust and impurities.
  2. Place the rinsed hominy in a large pot with enough water to cover it by at least two inches.
  3. Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat.
  4. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. After 30 minutes, check if the hominy is tender; if not, continue to simmer and check every 5 minutes.
  6. Once tender, pour the hominy into a colander to drain excess water.
  7. Return the drained hominy to the pot and add olive oil, salt, garlic powder, cumin, and black pepper.
  8. Stir well to combine all the flavors and cook for an additional 5 minutes on low heat.
  9. Transfer the hominy to a serving bowl and enjoy.

Notes

For added flavor, try adding a splash of lime juice or chopped cilantro before serving.
