Ingredients

Main
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste optional, for extra flavor

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Measuring cups
  • Wooden spoon or whisk
  • Glass storage jar or bottle
  • Fine mesh strainer (optional)

Method

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the granulated sugar and water.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir occasionally until the sugar dissolves completely, about 5 minutes.
  3. Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the pure vanilla extract and vanilla bean paste, if using.
  4. Allow the syrup to cool in the saucepan for about 10 minutes.
  5. If you used vanilla bean paste, strain the syrup through a fine mesh strainer for a smoother consistency.
  6. Pour the cooled syrup into a clean glass storage jar or bottle.
  7. Seal the jar tightly and store it in the refrigerator, where it can last for up to a month.

Notes

Use your homemade vanilla syrup to sweeten coffee, drizzle over pancakes, or as a base for flavored cocktails.
