Ingredients

Main
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Equipment

  • Deep frying pan or deep fryer
  • Whisk
  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Slotted spoon or spider
  • Paper towels

Method

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and then add the milk and vanilla extract.
  3. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined.
  4. In a deep frying pan, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C).
  5. Using a funnel or a squeeze bottle, carefully drizzle the batter into the hot oil in a circular pattern.
  6. Fry the cake for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
  7. Use a slotted spoon to remove the funnel cake from the oil and place it on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  8. Once drained, generously dust the funnel cake with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

Funnel cakes are best enjoyed warm and fresh. Pair them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a side of fresh berries.
