Ingredients

Main
  • 1 pound fresh okra sliced
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper optional
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Equipment

  • Large skillet or frying pan
  • Mixing bowl
  • slotted spoon
  • Paper towels
  • Knife and cutting board

Method

  1. Wash the fresh okra thoroughly and slice it into 1/2-inch pieces.
  2. Place the sliced okra in a mixing bowl and pour in the buttermilk.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
  4. Remove the okra from the buttermilk, allow excess to drip off, and toss it in the cornmeal mixture.
  5. In a large skillet, pour enough vegetable oil to cover the bottom and heat over medium-high heat.
  6. Once the oil is shimmering, carefully add the coated okra in batches and fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  7. Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried okra and transfer it to a plate lined with paper towels.
  8. Serve the fried okra hot, garnished with a sprinkle of salt.

Notes

For extra crunch, let the coated okra sit for about 10 minutes before frying.
