  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Equipment

  • Cast iron skillet or frying pan
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • slotted spoon
  • Paper towels

Method

  1. Wash and slice the tomatoes into 1/4 inch thick rounds.
  2. In a mixing bowl, pour in the buttermilk.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
  4. Dip each tomato slice into the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off.
  5. Dredge the buttermilk-coated tomatoes into the cornmeal mixture, ensuring they are fully covered.
  6. In a skillet, heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
  7. Carefully place a few coated tomato slices in the hot oil, frying them for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  8. Once cooked, remove the tomatoes using a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  9. Serve warm for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

These crispy green tomatoes are fantastic on their own or pair well with a zesty remoulade sauce.
