Ingredients

Main
  • 4 slices of bread thick-cut works best
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Maple syrup for serving
  • Powdered sugar optional, for garnish

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Frying pan or griddle
  • Spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon.
  2. Heat a frying pan or griddle over medium heat until hot.
  3. Dip each bread slice into the egg mixture, coating both sides and allowing excess to drip off.
  4. Place the soaked bread slices onto the heated pan and cook for 2 to 3 minutes on the first side, until golden brown.
  5. Add a tablespoon of butter to the pan, then flip the slices and cook the second side for another 2 to 3 minutes, until golden and crispy.
  6. If making multiple batches, keep cooked slices warm in a low oven (about 200°F) until ready to serve.
  7. When all slices are cooked, transfer to plates and top with maple syrup and powdered sugar, if desired.
  8. Serve immediately and enjoy your French toast while warm.

Notes

For best results, use day-old bread to absorb the egg mixture without becoming too soggy; keep cooked toast warm in a low oven until serving.
