Ingredients

Main
  • 1 pound powdered sugar sifted
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon light corn syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon glycerin optional, for pliability

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Electric mixer or whisk
  • Rolling pin
  • Fondant mat or clean countertop
  • Sharp knife or pizza cutter
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Plastic wrap

Method

  1. Start by cleaning your countertop or using a fondant mat.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the sifted powdered sugar, corn syrup, and vanilla extract.
  3. Slowly add water to the mixture while stirring.
  4. Transfer the mixture to your clean surface and knead it until it reaches a smooth and pliable consistency.
  5. If desired, add food coloring and knead until you achieve your desired shade.
  6. Using a rolling pin, roll out the fondant to about 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Carefully lift the rolled fondant and place it over your cake, smoothing it down and removing air bubbles.
  8. Trim off any excess fondant around the base of the cake with a sharp knife or pizza cutter.

Notes

Keep your fondant covered in plastic wrap when not in use to prevent it from drying out.
