Ingredients

Main
  • 1 cup red lentils
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 2 tomatoes chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 inch ginger grated
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or ghee
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Equipment

  • Large pot or saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Blender or immersion blender

Method

  1. Rinse the red lentils under cold running water.
  2. In a large pot, combine the rinsed lentils and water. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 20 minutes.
  3. While the lentils are cooking, heat oil or ghee in a separate pan. Sauté the diced onions until they are soft and translucent.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking for about a minute.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, and cumin seeds to the onion mixture. Cook until the tomatoes break down, about 5 minutes.
  6. Once the lentils are tender, add the onion-tomato mixture to the pot. Stir well to combine, adding salt to taste.
  7. Let everything simmer together for another 5-10 minutes.
  8. Blend the dal using an immersion blender if you prefer a smoother texture.

Notes

Serve with warm naan or rice for a complete meal.
