- Fill your large glass completely with ice, leaving just a bit of room at the top. Using a chilled glass will keep your drink colder longer and prevent the ice from melting too quickly.
- Pour 1 to 2 tablespoons of coconut syrup directly over the ice. Start with 1 tablespoon if you're new to this drink, as you can always add more but you can't take it out once it's in there.
- Slowly pour the chilled Dr Pepper over the ice and syrup, filling the glass about three-quarters full. Pouring slowly prevents excessive fizzing and keeps all that carbonation where it belongs.
- Gently pour the half and half over the top of the drink. The cream will create beautiful swirls as it mixes with the soda, which is part of the visual appeal of this beverage.
- Use a spoon or straw to gently stir the drink from bottom to top, mixing the coconut syrup throughout. Don't stir too vigorously or you'll lose the carbonation that makes this drink so refreshing.
- Take a sip and decide if you need more coconut syrup or cream. Everyone's sweetness preference is different, so customize it to your liking at this stage.
- Top off the glass with additional Dr Pepper if you have room. This final pour ensures you get the perfect ratio of soda to cream.
- Add a lime wedge to the rim and drop a maraschino cherry into the drink for that classic soda fountain look. Serve immediately while the drink is still fizzy and ice-cold.
Notes
Always add the coconut syrup before the Dr Pepper so it settles at the bottom and distributes more evenly when you stir. Chill your Dr Pepper in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before making this drink. Use crushed ice instead of cubes for a more authentic Sonic-style texture. Start conservatively with coconut syrup and add more only if needed.
