Ingredients

Main
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter cold
  • 1 cup milk warm
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg for egg wash

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Rolling pin
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Oven
  • Cooling rack

Method

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour and salt.
  3. Pour the yeast mixture into the dry ingredients. Mix until a rough dough forms.
  4. Cut the cold butter into thin slices.
  5. On a floured surface, roll out the dough into a rectangle. Layer the butter slices on two-thirds of the dough and fold the unbuttered third over the butter.
  6. Roll the dough out again into a rectangle and fold it into thirds. Repeat this process two more times, chilling the dough for 30 minutes between folds.
  7. After the final fold and chill, roll out the dough into a rectangle one last time. Roll it tightly into a loaf shape and place it seam-side down in a greased loaf pan.
  8. Cover the loaf and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour.
  9. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  10. Brush the top of the loaf with egg wash.
  11. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
