Ingredients

Main
  • 1 cup sugar for caramel
  • 1 can 14 oz sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can 12 oz evaporated milk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Flan mold or individual ramekins
  • Roasting pan
  • Oven

Method

  1. In a medium saucepan, heat the sugar over medium heat, stirring constantly until it melts and turns golden brown.
  2. Quickly pour the melted caramel into your flan mold or ramekins, tilting to coat the bottom evenly.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth.
  4. Carefully pour the custard mixture over the hardened caramel in the mold.
  5. Place the flan mold into a roasting pan and add hot water to the pan, creating a water bath.
  6. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for about 60 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Once baked, remove the flan from the oven and let it cool to room temperature.
  8. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to let the flavors meld.
  9. To serve, run a knife around the edge of the flan, then invert it onto a serving plate.
