Ingredients

Main
  • 1 12-14 pounds whole turkey
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 2 tablespoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 2 teaspoons dried rosemary
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • Fresh herbs optional for stuffing

Equipment

  • Roasting pan
  • Meat thermometer
  • Basting brush
  • Aluminum foil
  • Cutting board
  • Carving knife

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C). Remove the turkey from the fridge and let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before cooking.
  2. Pat the turkey dry with paper towels to ensure crispy skin. Rub the softened butter all over the turkey and under the skin for extra flavor.
  3. Sprinkle the salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, and rosemary evenly over the turkey.
  4. Place the turkey breast side up in a roasting pan. If desired, stuff the cavity with fresh herbs.
  5. Pour the chicken broth into the bottom of the roasting pan.
  6. Cover the turkey loosely with aluminum foil. Roast for 2-3 hours, removing the foil in the last hour.
  7. Use a meat thermometer to check the thickest part of the thigh; it should read 165°F (75°C).
  8. Remove the turkey from the oven and let it rest for at least 20-30 minutes before carving.

Notes

Serve with classic sides like garlic mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and cranberry sauce.
