Chinese 5 Spice Blend

Ingredients
  

Main
  • 2 star anise pods
  • 1 teaspoon Sichuan peppercorns
  • 1/2 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1/2 cinnamon stick about 2 inches
  • 1/4 teaspoon fennel seeds

Equipment

  • Small skillet or dry pan
  • Measuring spoons
  • Spice grinder or mortar and pestle
  • Small glass jar with airtight lid
  • Wooden spoon

Method
 

  1. Gather all whole spices and measure them out.
  2. Heat a small skillet over medium heat for about 30 seconds until warm.
  3. Add the star anise, Sichuan peppercorns, cloves, cinnamon stick, and fennel seeds to the skillet and toast for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring constantly until fragrant.
  4. Transfer the toasted spices to a plate and let cool completely for at least 5 minutes.
  5. Place the cooled spices in a spice grinder or mortar and pestle and grind to a fine powder.
  6. Pour the ground spice blend into a clean, dry glass jar with an airtight lid and seal tightly.

Notes

Store in a cool, dark place for up to 6 months. Use within 4 to 6 weeks for peak freshness.
