Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Rolling pin
  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife or pastry cutter
  • Deep frying pan or pot
  • slotted spoon
  • Paper towels
  • Large plate for serving

Method

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, baking powder, and spices.
  2. Stir in the melted butter, honey, and orange blossom water.
  3. Knead the mixture for about 5-7 minutes until you achieve a smooth and elastic dough.
  4. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  5. Divide the dough into small balls and roll them out into thin rectangles.
  6. Cut each piece into strips, then twist and shape them into intricate forms.
  7. In a deep frying pan, heat oil over medium heat until hot.
  8. Fry the shaped pastries in batches until they are golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  9. Once removed from the oil, immediately dip the hot pastries in warm honey.

Notes

Chebakia is delightful on its own, but pairs well with mint tea or coffee.
