Ingredients

Main
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup of buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup of unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Heat resistant spatula
  • Storage container

Method

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, buttermilk, and unsalted butter.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir occasionally until the butter melts and the mixture begins to bubble, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Once bubbling, stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Carefully add the baking soda to the bubbling mixture; it will foam up.
  5. Continue stirring for another minute until the syrup is smooth and well combined.
  6. Remove the saucepan from heat and let it cool slightly.
  7. Pour the syrup into a heat-resistant container for storage.
  8. Drizzle the syrup over your favorite pancakes, waffles, or French toast.

Notes

For an even richer flavor, try browning the butter before mixing it with the other ingredients!
