Ingredients

Main
  • 3 cups cornbread crumbled
  • 1 cup chicken broth or vegetable broth
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 onion diced
  • 2 celery stalks diced
  • 2 eggs beaten
  • 1 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Skillet
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. If you haven't made your cornbread yet, bake it according to your favorite recipe or package instructions. Allow it to cool before crumbling it into a large bowl.
  2. In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced onion and celery, cooking until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. In the mixing bowl with crumbled cornbread, add the sautéed vegetables. Stir in the broth, beaten eggs, sage, thyme, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  4. If the mixture seems too dry, add more broth until it reaches your desired consistency. It should be moist but not soupy.
  5. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures an even bake and crispy edges.
  6. Lightly grease your baking dish, then pour the cornbread mixture into it. Spread it evenly across the dish for uniform baking.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-45 minutes. The top should be golden brown and firm to the touch.
  8. Once baked, let the dressing cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For extra crunch, broil the dressing for a few minutes after baking, keeping a close eye to prevent burning. This dressing pairs perfectly with turkey or chicken and is great with gravy.
