  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup onion finely minced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Glaze
  • 1 cup grape jelly
  • 3/4 cup chili sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Large skillet or saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or silicone spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • slow cooker (optional)
  • Meat thermometer (optional)

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup breadcrumbs, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together 1 egg and 1/4 cup milk, then pour into the breadcrumb mixture and stir to form a paste.
  3. Add 2 pounds ground beef, 1/2 cup minced onion, and 2 cloves minced garlic; mix gently until just combined.
  4. Shape the mixture into 24 meatballs, about 1.5 inches in diameter.
  5. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat with a light coating of oil and brown meatballs 2 to 3 minutes per side.
  6. In a bowl, whisk together 1 cup grape jelly, 3/4 cup chili sauce, 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, and 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard until smooth.
  7. Return the browned meatballs to the skillet, pour the glaze over them, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  8. Check that the internal temperature of the meatballs reaches 160°F and adjust seasoning with a pinch of salt or splash of Worcestershire sauce if needed.

Meatballs can be made ahead and stored in their sauce in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or frozen for up to 3 months. Reheat gently in a slow cooker set to warm.
