Ingredients

Main
  • 1 ½ cups warm water 110°F to 115°F
  • 1 packet active dry yeast 2 ¼ teaspoons
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg beaten, for egg wash
  • Coarse sea salt for topping

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Medium saucepan
  • slotted spoon
  • Kitchen towel

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms, then knead it on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  3. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat your oven to 450°F.
  5. Once the dough has risen, divide it into eight equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and twist it into a pretzel shape.
  6. In a medium saucepan, bring about 8 cups of water to a boil and add baking soda.
  7. Carefully drop each shaped pretzel into the boiling water for about 30 seconds. Remove them with a slotted spoon and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  8. Brush the pretzels with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Let them cool slightly before enjoying.

Notes

These pretzels are best served warm and can be paired with various dips like cheese sauce, honey mustard, or marinara sauce.
