About

Hi, I’m Emma Johnson, the home cook behind Mama’s Secret Recipes.

I created this site to share the food I grew up loving: comforting meals, familiar flavours, and recipes that bring people together. My goal is to help you enjoy cooking and feel more confident in your kitchen, whether you’re making a quick breakfast or preparing dinner for the people you love.

I’m not a trained chef. I’m a passionate home cook who believes that good food starts with care, clear instructions, and an understanding of your ingredients.

My Story

Growing up, the kitchen was the heart of my home. Mama cooked by instinct, drawing on tradition and her love of feeding the family. Watching her taught me to appreciate the small details that make a meal special.

Mama’s Secret Recipes began with a desire to preserve those dishes and techniques. I wanted to turn recipes that lived in memory into instructions someone else could follow, enjoy, and eventually make their own.

That family connection still shapes the site. Alongside familiar favourites, I share recipes across different cuisines and occasions, keeping everyday home cooking at the centre of what I do.

What You’ll Find Here

My recipe collection covers everything from breakfast and snacks to main dishes, sides, breads, desserts, sauces, and drinks.

You might find a crispy smash burger for a relaxed dinner, a comforting chicken soup, homemade English scones, or a whiskey sour for a gathering. I enjoy sharing food for ordinary days as much as meals worth celebrating.

Throughout the site, I aim to provide:

  • Clear ingredient quantities to help you prepare before cooking.
  • Step-by-step instructions that explain how a dish comes together.
  • Practical tips for techniques, texture, and flavour.
  • Ingredient notes and substitutions to help you understand your options.
  • Storage and reheating guidance so you can make use of leftovers.

I also publish guides about ingredients and cooking methods. My aim is to answer the questions that come up in the kitchen and help you understand why a technique works.

How I Approach My Recipes

I test recipes in my own kitchen, taste the dishes myself, and share food I would be happy to serve to the people I love.

My approach centres on making instructions useful to another home cook. Knowing what dough should feel like, when to check for doneness, or how an ingredient affects texture can make a recipe easier to follow.

I want the recipe and its accompanying tips to work together. The recipe card gives you the ingredients and method, while the article provides room for explanations, troubleshooting, and variations.

Cooking results can change with different equipment, ingredients, and portion sizes. I aim to give you enough guidance to understand those differences and make thoughtful adjustments.

What I Believe About Cooking

You don’t need an expensive kitchen or professional training to make a meal you’re proud of. A manageable recipe and a little practice can help you build confidence.

I value food that is approachable, satisfying, and full of flavour. Sometimes that means a simple dish with a short ingredient list. Other times, it means taking your time with something you’ve been looking forward to making.

I hope this site helps you find both.

I’d Love to Hear From You

If you try a recipe, leave a comment and tell me how it turned out. I welcome questions, suggestions, and feedback about instructions that could be clearer.
